Consumer Prices for May 2022

In May 2022, the national Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 2.1 percent year-on-year. Among them, the prices in urban and rural areas both rose by 2.1 percent; the prices of food and non-food rose by 2.3 and 2.1 percent; the prices of consumer goods and service rose by 3.0 and 0.7 percent. From January to May, on average, the national consumer price rose by 1.5 percent over the same period last year.

 

In May, the national consumer price fell by 0.2 percent month on month. Among them, the prices in urban and rural area decreased by 0.2 and 0.1 percent; food prices dropped by 1.3 percent and nonfood prices rose by 0.1 percent; and consumer goods prices fell by 0.3 percent and service prices were flat.


 

I. Year-on-Year Changes of Prices of Different Categories

 

In May, the price of food, tobacco and alcohol rose by 2.1 percent year-on-year, affecting the CPI to rise by about 0.59 percentage point. Among foodstuff, the price of fresh fruit increased by 19.0 percent, which affected the CPI increase by about 0.36 percentage point; fresh vegetable prices rose by 11.6 percent, affecting CPI up by about 0.22 percentage point; egg prices rose by 10.6 percent, affecting CPI up by about 0.07 percentage point; grain prices rose by 3.2 percent, affecting CPI up by about 0.06 percentage point; the price of livestock meat decreased by 12.9 percent, affecting the CPI down by about 0.46 percentage point, of which the price of pork decreased by 21.1 percent, affecting the CPI down by about 0.34 percentage point; the price of aquatic products decreased by 1.6 percent, which affected the CPI to decrease by about 0.03 percentage point.

 

The prices of the other seven categories all rose year-on-year. Among them, the prices of transportation and communication, education, culture and entertainment, other supplies and services increased by 6.2, 1.8 and 1.8 percent respectively, the prices of daily necessities and services and housing increased by 1.4 and 1.0 percent respectively, and the prices of medical care and clothing increased by 0.7 and 0.5 percent respectively.

 

II. Month-on-Month Changes of Prices of Different Categories

 

In May, the price of food, tobacco and alcohol decreased by 0.9 percent month on month, affecting the CPI to decline by about 0.24 percentage point. Among foodstuff, the price of fresh vegetables decreased by 15.0 percent, affecting the CPI down by about 0.36 percentage point; the price of aquatic products decreased by 1.0 percent, which affected the CPI to decrease by about 0.02 percentage point; the price of livestock meat rose by 1.9 percent, affecting the CPI rise by about 0.06 percentage point, of which the price of pork rose by 5.2 percent, affecting the CPI rise by about 0.06 percentage point; fresh fruit prices rose by 1.5 percent, affecting CPI up by about 0.03 percentage point; egg prices rose by 1.4 percent, affecting CPI up by about 0.01 percentage point; grain prices rose by 0.5 percent, affecting CPI growth by about 0.01 percentage point.

 

The prices of the other seven categories rose six and fell one month on month. Among them, the prices of other supplies and services, clothing, daily necessities and services increased by 0.6, 0.4 and 0.2 percent respectively, and the prices of transportation and communications, education, culture and entertainment, and medical care all increased by 0.1 percent; while housing prices fell by 0.1 percent.
